Insight Theatre Company was formed in June 2008 as a result of Maggie Ryan’s dream to found a professional theater company that would not only present excellent theatre, but would offer students the opportunity to learn from theatre professionals. Insight Theatre was officially incorporated in June 2009 with Maggie Ryan as Artistic Director. A Board of Directors was formed and by laws created with the help of VLAA. The 501(c)(3) final determination was received on March 4, 2010.
Exceptional artistry with high production values are the focus of our work, and our unique internship program is central to our mission. Insight has just completed its 11th season of professional theatre. We are an Equity Company as a Small Professional Theatre. Our directors and designers also possess professional status and the acting company is selected from equity and non-equity actors based in St. Louis.
Insight Theatre has performed 46 productions. including dramas, comedies, classical plays and musicals. Insight has consistently received nominations as well as awards throughout the 11 seasons from the Kevin Kline Awards, the Circle Awards, and The Broadway World awards. Critics from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Ladue News, Belleville News, and KDHX radio as well as Broadway World review our shows. Insight recently was invited to bring SPINNING INTO BUTTER to a special conference on race relations in Monterey, California. Middlebury Institute sponsored the production; the director and cast members participated in talk back sessions. This highlight demonstrates how Insight’s reputation has helped us connect with a broader community.
Our 12th season, opening in March 2019, will be full of poetry, adventure and love; its theme is “A Riot of the Heart!” We will produce three plays: Daddy Long Legs, The Revolutionists, and Shakespeare in Love, in addition to our Intern acted, directed and produced children’s play (TBD).
Our goal is to produce the highest quality of plays and musicals in order to entertain, inspire, and reveal the complexity of the human spirit.
We believe the art of theatre is vital to the welfare of today’s society, a society that is searching for truth and longing for hope. Our intent is to produce classical and contemporary plays and musicals that offer an honest and valid view of our world.
Our theatre is unique in that in addition to producing artistically excellent works, our purpose is to offer students positions as interns in our professional company so that they can learn all aspects of theatre production and benefit from the expertise of professional actors, designers and directors.
